Against commerce?

Looks like there will be one province remaining that is not going to allow shopping on Sundays.

I guess it’s a blessing in some ways. Growing up in Germany there is no shopping on Sundays…. Does it make things “better” as they claim in the article? I am not sure….

But then, maybe not being able to blow money is a good thing.

HALIFAX — Nova Scotians are holding on to their unique status as the lone Canadian province where Sunday shopping is banned year-round in most stores.

Results from a provincewide plebiscite Saturday suggested those opposed to a change won a passionate debate by suggesting wide-open Sunday shopping would harm family togetherness and take away from the province’s peaceful character.

It was a hard-fought battle with the final result too close to call until almost all of the polls had reported by early this morning.

With 48 of 55 municipalities reporting, 55 per cent of those who cast ballots checked the No box when asked if they were in favour of Sunday shopping at most retail outlets. Forty-five per cent voted Yes.

It’s the small things that count.

I was at Moonbean cafe today and while reading a rather good book (and the Toronto Star) two women came in asking for a box. It seems they found a hurt bird on the ground and wanted to put him in a box to bring him to a vet…..

Wonder if that would have happend in one of the more “hipper” places in town?

Maybe you want to let off the fries with that Burger

The BBC has a short blurb about severe side effects for stomach stapeling. A Procedure (I really like the picture they put on there, sort of hard to believe that she had that procedure) that has become more popular as of late, especially in the US.

You might want to think twice about it, maybe it’s just better to live with the fat and try to get a healty lifestyle together around it?

Neurologist Dr Jim Dyck, who worked on the study, said: “Surgeons who do weight-reduction surgery and the general public and should be aware that nerve damage is a frequent consequence of the surgery.

“I’m not saying that people shouldn’t have this surgery, but I am saying that there are real potential complications and that good follow-up care is necessary.”

The researchers found 16% of weight-reduction surgery patients they studied developed a peripheral neuropathy.

Red Army invades the Vatican

If Reagan could have seen this….

Russian Red Army Orchestra choir performs in the Vatican

Unthinkable before the fall of the Soviet Union, the event staged in the Vatican’s general audience hall was televised live in Italy and Russia.

A Swiss Guard marched across the stage and a Russian military guard goose-stepped in the opposite direction.

Cossack dancers capered where religious ceremonies normally take place.

On the stage, bathed in red light, the choir founded more than 70 years ago by soldiers who took part in the Bolshevik revolution sang traditional Russian songs in full dress military uniform.

The Pope was wheeled on his portable throne into the central aisle to watch the performance.
